As you’ll see below, we began by researching tropical (Caribbean) lobsters. This species is common around the world. The Magnabait™ began as the “Lobster Caller™.” Its mission was to replace the immature lobsters (shorts) that are usually put into the traps to call the larger lobsters to join them. The survival rate of the shorts is very poor. Imagine the damage to the lobster population when you use the teenage pre-breeders as bait to capture the mature breeders.

The Lobster Caller™ was ultimately successful at its task. Unfortunately during hurricanes and other increasingly bad weather, we lost traps containing these devices. The losses became financially prohibitive. Our lobster research continues closer to the equator with plans to eventually go below it where hurricanes are very rare.

Like most humans, everything in the ocean loves to eat lobster. One of the greatest problems in the development of the Lobster Caller™ was that a large variety of fish recognized the calls of the lobster. They would follow the sounds of the Lobster Caller™ to the trap. Fish are much faster than lobsters so they would be waiting at the trap to eat the lobsters when they arrived. Our “perfect” Lobster Caller™ had backfired when improperly tuned but turned out to be a "perfect fish caller" as you will see.

IT STARTED OUT AS A JOKE!

PDF Print E-mail
We used to joke sarcastically that fishermen would love our invention because it attracted fish so quickly. It took us a year to realize that lobster could remember their own calls far longer than fish. We re-timed the Lobster Caller™ so that the calls were farther apart. That way the lobsters could find the traps but the fish got lost. Eventually we realized that our problem was a blessing in disguise. The Lobster Caller’s ability to attract fish was extremely reliable among salt water species. They usually arrived fast and hungry.

We had no reason to believe that the Lobster Caller’s sound of the tropical crayfish, P. argus, would also attract fresh water fish. How could it? They could never have heard it before so why would they come to it?

Almost as a joke we arranged to throw a Lobster Caller™ in the shallows of a mountain lake at an elevation of 9,000 feet. From an adjacent higher area, we could observe it through the extremely clear water. In about five minutes, large trout began to congregate near it. We had used one of the older Lobster Callers™ which generated sounds about 20 seconds apart.

We also tested it on bass and other fish. They too came in fast and hungry like the salt water fish but were a bit more cautious. The truth is, we had no idea why it worked so well. Then one day one of our founders noticed that crayfish gathered around a unit placed in the shallows of a fresh water reservoir. Only then was it apparent that fresh water crayfish, a favorite food of fresh water predatory fish, responded to the sound. So did the fish. We then added some additional attractants to further encourage the fish. After additional research, the Lobster Caller™ became the Magnabait™ and now you have a chance to own one.

Proof is actually a body of evidence sufficient in quantity and quality that you accept it as fact. The Magnabait™ costs enough that most people should require such evidence. Considering the track record of fishing gimmicks, this is highly appropriate. On the other hand, if the Magnabait™ works as advertised, it’s a tremendous bargain.

We hope that our evidence plus your enthusiasm for catching fish will motivate you to overcome your bad past experiences and gamble on us. You are considering a “bet,” but unlike Las Vegas or the stock market, you get your money back if you don’t win. Not bad!

Let us clarify what we are saying: Magnabait™ attracts fish to where you can attempt to catch them. NO more – NO less. They will not jump into your boat. Magnabait™ calls them from an enormous area, but you must bring them the last 30 feet or so yourself.

To make sure that your investigation leaves no stone unturned, we’ve listed most all of the questions that people ask. It’s in a question and answer format below:

While you’re reading, try to keep in mind that in this case, “proof” is a three-step process:

  • First: Do you find it believable that we actually did (and still do) research?
  • Second: Do you believe that the Magnabait™ was truly developed from the “Lobster Caller™” based on the evidence presented?
  • Third: Do you think it is realistic that fish are truly attracted by the crayfish call, plus the light and other Magnabait™ features, based on the data presented here and elsewhere in this website?

The "No Bull" Test

PDF Print E-mail

We could talk till we are blue in the face about all the research, statisitics, and years of open water testing that went into developing Magnabait but there is nothing more convincing than testing something for yourself.  So do your own open water testing. Just open and print your own NO BULL TEST form (click on the link "No Bull Test" to print your own copy) and use it to see for yourself just how well Magnabait works!

We are so convinced you will love it that we give you a six month no hastle money back gurantee!  With this kind of gurantee you can't afford not to try it out for yourself. See just how many more, and how much larger fish you catch are, just by using Magnabait. If you think Magnabait does not actually help you catch more and larger fish, then send it back to us, no questions asked, for a full refund.  You cannot find a fairer deal than this! And when you start catching those bigger fish we want you to send us pictures of you with your fish and tell us your story so we can put it on our website.

Is this Proof?

graves_trout_300x400.png
Trout caught in 30 minutes using MagnaBait by Mr. Graves of Lakewood, CO in an area he "had little luck" over the many times he fished there before.

We’ve all seen them a thousand times. This is yet another picture of a man holding up sizable fish while giving credit to some product he says he used. Was the shot faked? Is this man a guide or professional fisherman? Did we freeze one fish while waiting days to catch another so he could be photographed holding them together? Did we buy the picture on the internet from a stock photographer who never hear of the Magnabait™? For a little money the guy standing there could be a celebrity who’s never used a Magnabait™ and never caught the fish he’s holding.

If you are willing to take my word for it, this photo happens to be the truth. I know because he got the Magnabait™ from me. I took the photo with my camera on my front proch. We cleaned the fish in my kitchen and grilled them on my back porch. We had a damn fine meal from them about two hours later in my kitchen. One of the fish is waiting in my freezer to provide another meal.

Everything above is the absolute truth – but is it proof?

Actually no, not from a scientific viewpoint. In science the evidence is what we call an indicator. With enough indicators, you proceed to a controlled investigation – that’s research. It’s kind of like the “Pepsi Challenge.” You try to create side-by-side comparisons with as few variables as possible.

In our case, in addition to the lobster research discussed below, the same fishermen fished from exactly the same spot, into the same water, using the same bait or lure. In one span of 30 minutes, he did use a Magnabait™. In the other equal time period, which was immediately before or after, he didn’t.

It didn’t take too many experiments to discover that the Magnabait™ always had to be used in the second time period. This was technically unfair, but necessary. Whenever the Magnabait™ was used first, there were never any fish left for the second part of the experiment. Even in tests where we only observed the fish but did not catch them, the remaining fish left as soon as we retrieved the Magnabait™.

This would appear to imply that the fish would not have congregated in these spots were it not for the use of the Magnabait™.

A lot of controlled experiments have been performed, usually by independent fishermen. In all cases except two, the Magnabait™ won by 200% or more. In one experiment, it tied 0 – 0 and in the other the Magnabait™ lost about 8 to 0.

Scientists would be comfortable in saying that in controlled tests, the Magnabait™ wins substantially about 90% of the time. We feel that this was and continues to be very substantial evidence. The prey were mostly freshwater bass, trout, and panfish plus a variety of saltwater species. These results gave us enough confidence to provide “the 200% more fish” statement we make in our advertising. Keep in mind that there are many fish and fishing circumstances we have yet to test. The indicators we’ve received thus far from our customers have been generally positive.

Does this constitute proof?

PDF Print E-mail

That depends on two things:

  1. 1) Do you believe were telling you the truth?
  2. 2) Does the compiled evidence regarding the Magnabait™ thus far satisfy your standards?

The bottom line is that we don’t set your standard for acceptability. You do. Only you know if qualifies as "proof".

If you are willing to consider that the above information may be proof, please consider the following questions and answers.

Q. Do you have a patent or other proprietary rights?

A. Yes. ABT has obtained full worldwide licensing rights to the Magnabait™ technology. The device and method are fully covered by US patent and worldwide patents are pending. Allowances of all major claims has been accepted by the patent office. The aquatic signals used have been copyrighted worldwide.

Q. A lot of fishing equipment claims to have some "research." In reality this usually means that the inventor and his pals went fishing with it. Do you have any official government documents that give permission to do actual independent scientific research?

A. The letter below is a copy of the cover letter from the Florida Fish and Wildlife commission approving our second long term research program. It is almost entirely made up of side-by-side trap comparison tests performed by independent professional fishing captains with independent observers. Most of these tests were conducted in the Florida Keys – the world’s third largest coral reef as well as one of the world’s most important and sensitive ecological areas. Our performance record has never had any violations.

As far as we know, the Magnabait™ is the only piece of recreational fishing equipment ever to benefit from such a permit and over $2,000,000 in research performed under such authority. We expect to continue our research in the future.

Q. Can you absolutely guarantee and prove that the Magnabait™ will attract more fish than if I go fishing without it?

A. Yes. You have read of our long history of research and for your own assurance, we guarantee your satisfaction with a six-month money back, no questions asked, return policy if you are not satisfied.

As stated elsewhere, our proof is based on scientific research that took place over five years and cost over $2,000,000 prior to marketing the Magnabait™. We intend to continue our research efforts. As stated above, we have an extensive patent, copyrights, and trademarks around this technology. We doubt that any other company in the history of fishing lures, baits, or attractants has ever gone to such lengths. A major reason this effort has been possible is because it was part of a much broader research project with major environmental and commercial goals. The Magnabait™ benefits from that data. In other words, our saltwater fish data was acquired simultaneously with our lobster data.

The Magnabait™ is a consumer version of a marine industrial device for use in traps that attract spiny (tropical) lobster as well as most types of marine fish common within a few miles of shore as bycatch. Catching fish in traps is illegal in all United States fresh and salt water with one exception: Any game fish caught in conjunction with lobster in lobster traps can be kept by commercial fishermen under certain strict regulations.

This one and only exception to the rule is extremely important from a research standpoint. To our knowledge, it is the only way to perform side-by-side research comparisons. Our tests were similar to the “Pepsi Challenge” for fish. In a large variety of tests, the fish were able to choose one of the following:

1) Enter a trap where there was no bait.

2) Enter a trap containing live immature lobster or other favorite fish bait.

3) Enter a trap containing the Magnabait™ alone.

4) Enter a trap containing the Magnabait™ and live baby lobster together.

5) Not enter any of the traps.

Here is the summary of the results:

1) Fish were rarely found in traps with no bait. So results were overwhelmingly in favor of the Magnabait™.

2) The Magnabait™ used alone averaged from 60% to over 200% in testing better than live baby lobsters as bait.

3) The Magnabait™ combined in the traps with live baby lobsters as bait often scored higher than either Magnabait™ alone or baby lobster alone. This indicates the power of using your bait or lure in combination with the Magnabait™.

Note: By law, the entry way on all spiny lobster traps must be clear of doors or any method that would prevent fish or lobsters from leaving any time at will. Therefore the fisherman only catches those animals in the trap at the time it is pulled and emptied.

The tests were performed in the Florida Keys and the Caribbean. In these areas the type of trapping we did is legal, and the water is often clear enough for distant observation by a diver or even a boat on the surface.

Unfortunately these advantages are rarely available in fresh water. In warmer weather when most people enjoy fresh water fishing, the water is often clouded by runoff or algae.

We’ve been advised that comparison tests between individual fishermen would show who was the most skillful at working the lure or landing fish or any of dozens of other variables. Unfortunately this approach could sway the evidence about whether or not the Magnabait™ actually attracted fish. Truly expert fishermen will usually catch fish with or without it. Magnabait™ is aimed at the other 999 out of 1,000 of us who are not true experts. Even fish locators aren’t much help because most freshwater fishing is done in shallow water.

Freshwater Testing:

PDF Print E-mail
We have devised an experiment for freshwater fishing. We call it the “No Bull Test.” One fisherman fishes the same location with the same bait for two equal periods of times. Period one is fished with bait or lure only - no Magnabait™. Period two is fished using the bait or lure just as before but with Magnabait™ used as directed. In nearly all the tests so far, the Magnabait™ period won by 200-700%! This is the best freshwater fishing test possible.

Q. How can I do my own “No Bull Test”?

A. The same way we do. It’s easy. Just fish a small area of water from the same spot with the same bait or lure. For the first 30 minutes, do NOT use the Magnabait™. For the second 30 minutes, use the Magnabait™ according to directions.

The vast majority who try this get substantially more fish in the second 30 minute period. You probably will, too. Have fun!

Q. You say the purpose of the Magnabait™ is to attract more fish to an area so that I have the opportunity to catch more fish per hour. Show me the math.

A. Magnabait™ can help you cover more than 15 times the area per hour. Let’s use an area the size of a football field for our example. Our ad mentions the diameter of a football field but for the sake of simplicity we’ll only use the 53 1/3 yd wide X 100 yd long dimensions of a football field in this example:

First without the Magnabait™: This example assumes the following: You would need to move and re-position your boat 20 times and then you would cast 50 to 70 feet each time to cover the football field. You would cast three different lures or baits an average of 20 times each. You therefore would average 60 casts for each position of your boat. At only 30 seconds per cast, that’s 30 minutes for each position of your boat.

Based on the time saved to cover the same area, you can calculate the efficiency difference by taking the Magnabait’s 45 minutes and dividing it into the 700 minutes fishing without Magnabait™ 45 divided into 700 (700/45) = 15.5. This means that

using the Magnabait™ is 15 times (or 1500% ) more efficient than fishing without it!

That is roughly 11 2/3 hours the old way verses only 3⁄4 of an hour with Magnabait™.
